Governor Jerry Brown officially signed into law a ban on gay rehabilitation therapy. Effective January 1st, 2013, therapists will no longer be allowed to use therapy to attempt to convert gay and lesbian clients to straight. The law is the first of its kind in the country.
As I wrote several months ago, I fully support the passage of this law, and encourage other states to follow suit. Homosexual rehabilitation therapy is ineffective, dangerous, and insulting.
While I don’t believe it is useful, or even possible, to try to change one’s sexual orientation, I do understand that being gay, bisexual, or questioning can cause enormous psychological pain and stress. I regularly work with LGBTQQI clients on dealing with prejudice, exploring family dynamics, examining their own questions, and managing relationships. As always, I aim to create a space that feels safe and judgment-free. Are you interested in talking about your relationship with your sexuality?
